The short answer
Every plumbing question is really three questions: what is happening, can it wait, and who do I call? Here are straight answers on leaks, drains, water heaters, toilets, sewer lines, cost, and when to stop reading and pick up the phone.
Leak questions
- How do I tell if I have a hidden leak?
- Watch for warm or damp floor spots, baseboard moisture, sounds of running water with everything off, or a water bill that climbs without a reason.
- Should I shut off the water?
- If water is actively spreading, yes. If it’s contained, leaving the main on lets the plumber isolate the line.
- Is a small drip worth a call?
- Drips rarely fix themselves. A short visit is cheaper than a wall repair later.
Drain questions
- Why does the same drain keep clogging?
- Repeating clogs usually mean the cause is further down the line than the fixture trap.
- Are chemical drain cleaners safe?
- They’re hard on pipes and often don’t reach the real clog. They can also complicate the eventual repair.
- What if more than one drain is slow?
- That points toward a branch or main line issue rather than a local clog.
Water heater questions
- Is water under the heater serious?
- It can be. Shut off water to the unit if you can do so safely and call.
- Repair or replace?
- Depends on the unit’s age, whether the tank is leaking, and how many times it’s been repaired before.
- Tank or tankless?
- Both have trade-offs. The existing setup and household demand usually decide.
Toilet and fixture questions
- Why does my toilet keep running?
- Usually a worn flapper, fill valve, chain, or float, most are repair conversations.
- Water at the base of the toilet?
- That points to a wax seal or flange issue. Address it before flooring is affected.
- When should a fixture be replaced?
- When it’s cracked, leaks at the base, or has had multiple repairs in a short window.
Sewer line questions
- What do sewer warning signs look like?
- Recurring backups, smells, gurgling drains, multiple slow fixtures, soggy yard spots.
- Should I keep using water?
- Minimize water use until the line can be looked at.
- Does every sewer issue need replacement?
- No. A camera inspection tells the real story.
Cost and scheduling questions
- Can you quote over the phone?
- For some defined jobs, a range. For unknown causes, an honest number usually needs a short on-site look first.
- What helps before scheduling?
- Describe what you’re seeing, where it’s happening, when it started, and whether water is active.
- What about parts?
- Parts or replacement fixtures change the picture and are explained before work moves forward.
Emergency plumbing questions
- Form or call?
- Form for planning and photos. Call if water is actively spreading or causing damage.
- What should I shut off?
- The local valve to the fixture, or the home’s main if the local valve doesn’t stop the water.
- What counts as urgent?
- Active leaks, backups, burst pipes, sewage in the home, or the only bathroom unusable.
