The short answer
It is an emergency when water is moving and will not stop, when sewage is coming up, when the only toilet in the house is out, or when water is heading for electrical. Shut off the nearest valve, then call. Everything else can wait for morning.
Active water
Water that won’t stop and a shutoff that doesn’t reach is the clearest case. Move belongings, find the main shutoff if you can, and call.
Backups
Sewage or wastewater backing into the home is a health issue as well as a plumbing issue. Stop using water and call.
Burst pipes
A burst pipe can move a lot of water quickly. The faster the main shuts off, the less the home takes on. Anything that won’t stop spreading needs a call rather than a form.
Only bathroom affected
A single-bathroom home with a non-working toilet is a different situation than a household with options. It’s reasonable to treat as urgent.
Water heater leaks
A leaking water heater rarely improves with time. If water is visible at or under the unit, shut off the water supply to the heater if you can do so safely and call.
When the form is not enough
The contact form is fine for planning, photos, and slow drips. For anything actively spreading or causing damage, a call gets the visit prioritized.
FAQs
- Should I call or use the form?
- Call if water is active or spreading. Use the form for slow drips, planning, or attaching photos.
- What should I shut off?
- The local valve to the fixture, or the home’s main supply if the local valve doesn’t stop the water.
- Is no hot water an emergency?
- Usually not, but a leaking water heater is. A heater that’s simply not heating can typically wait for a scheduled visit.
- What if sewage backs up?
- Stop using water in the home, keep family and pets away from the area, and call.
